Cliffhangers

cliffhangers are sometimes used although not always. It often features a main character in a precautions or difficult dilemma, or confronted with a shocking revelation.
This can entice the audience to keep watching in order to see how the situation resolves itself.

An example of a Cliffhanger is the scene from the Italian Job (1969)



It's not exactly strictly speaking a thriller, but the Italian Job gives us a great example of this in it's famous editing.
