Throughout the opening scene of memento all of the psychological thriller conventions are portrayed in one way or another. At the start we see the main character inking his skin, which signifies to us that he must take notes down for psychological reasons. The audience then realise that the character has memory loss problems. The way the shots have been edited creates a suspense as it makes the audience think to themselves, why the stories going backwards.

The sounds used in this opening also makes the scene more thriller like. It uses parallel sounds using sinister music while horrific images are shown.
This film has an extremely difficult narrative structure where events are told in 10 minute segments but backwards.
This echoes the confusion that the main character feels as he struggles to remember events.
