Evaluation 7. Progression

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?

Since finishing my thriller opening, I have noticed that I have progressed in many ways. Below I will compare both my preliminary task to my finished thriller piece.
You can see the image on the left, which has been screen grabbed from our preliminary task. During the first stages of the course we were new to the industry and so did not know what shots looked best in order to gain the best quality videos.

However now you can see the image on the right. This is an image from out final thriller opening, you can see that I have expanded with the knowledge learnt in class, in how to film using different techniques.Using the same strategy as of getting someone to walk in the scene, you can see that my thriller opening has a better quality to it such as making the scene look more suspicious. This is due to the fact that it has been filmed in a certain way to create this effect. The effect used to create this image, was a long shot this way we could get both the innocent girl and mysterious man in the same frame.

I have learnt a lot throughout the progression of this course, it has helped me to gain experience on how to film steadily, as well as edit clips to make them look more professional. Not only that it has taught me to work with others, being able to create a piece of media with people who i wouldn't have possible worked with if it wasn't for the course.
In the period of the last three months I have additionally leant about the media in the context of society. Being able to reach out to the audience and communicating with ranges of people to find out their opinions on what type of films they are interested in.

Evaluation 5. Attracting our Audience

How did you attract/address your audience?

There are many ways in which my thriller holds the audiences attention. Firstly by using fast paced clips, it created a speedy image which therefore caught the audiences eyes, as it became flashy. The music used also caught some of the audiences attention, as it worked very well with what was happening in the scene. The music was very disturbing and so lead to the audience wanting to carry on watching, as it would make them want to find out what happens, building up the tension.
The audience have even commented about wanting to find out what happens at the end, this is a good sign as it means that there has been a cliffhanger, and not all has been given out in the first two minutes of the clip. The scream at the end was also effective as it caught the attention of the audience by making them confused as to of what happens next, and who the suspicious man really is.

Evaluation 4. Audience

who would be the audience for the your media production?

As I mentioned on a previous post the thriller was aimed at teenagers/young adults. As a group doing our research we found out that thrillers would best suit a younger generation. This was depending on what type of thriller is was, and due to planning to make a scary thriller we believed it would believe a younger generation
After watching my thriller and sharing it on social networks I have found that my audience would be teenagers but more likely younger adults.

In my opinion I believe that this would appeal to young adults or even teenagers, as they are most likely to relate to it. By using teenagers as actors, it makes the audience feel more comfortable in watching them. It also makes them want to carry on watching as they would want to find out what happens to the teenage girl, as this is what happens to some people in reality unfortunately. Therefore some may even be able to relate to this.

Evaluation 3. Distubution

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There are a large sum of distribution companies worldwide, these companies are there to help the film get on it's way to cinema's and to let everyone know about the film e.g when it is released. It would be more suitable for my thriller to be shown national wide as it is a British film, so would most probably appeal to the UK. Therefore for this reason Film Four would be appropriate as they distribute small British films.
There are many other distribution companies that I would love to be working with, for example a big company set in america called Warner Bros. However it is very unlikely this would happen as they work with professional directors whom can produce excellent quality movies, to catch the eyes of the audience. As a result of being new comers to the industry we will not have a high chance of being distributed by them as well as other larger american distribution companies. If we had famous or well known actors in our film there would be more of a chance that a large company would distribute my thriller. Or we could even have well known music
However we could have a possible chance of working with smaller distribution companies, as not all cinema's would want to show our thriller. The thriller is more suitable to be shown locally, or even nationally and so the company Film Four would be ideal for this.

Evaluation 2. Social groups

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In my thriller sequence we have a unknown man chasing a young teenager. There are several social groups represented. Firstly the age group is considered, as we see that a teenage girl is walking out alone in the evening. This can show that women are week species compared to men in society. This may therefore make the audience believe that it would be better if teenage girls are not left walking alone as they are vulnerable and more likely to be attacked. by suspicious men. Gender was also represented in my thriller opening, as it fits the stereotype of how men are the leaders of society. This is shown when the innocent girl is trying to get away, as we see that the man is in control of what is going to happen. The man also creates a mysterious yet negative atmosphere in the thriller opening as his face is covered, and so the audience are finding it hard to see his face. This can relate to how most young men are portrayed as in the society. The image portrayed is an image of a teenage girl, which was similar to what we had used in our thriller opening.
